Victorian election 2026: enrolment closes at 8pm on Melbourne Cup Day
If you live in Victoria and your enrolment details are wrong or missing, you have until 8pm on Tuesday 3 November to fix them. That's Melbourne Cup Day. The state election is on Saturday 28 November 2026.
What happened
The Victorian Electoral Commission (VEC) says the electoral roll for the 2026 state election closes at 8pm on the day the writs are issued. This year that day is Tuesday 3 November, Melbourne Cup Day (VEC). The Parliament of Victoria lists the same date for both the writs and the enrolment deadline (Parliament of Victoria).
ABC News reported that this is one week earlier than at previous Victorian elections, and that election offices across the state will stay open until 8pm on 3 November to help people update their details (ABC News). news.com.au also gives the 8pm Tuesday 3 November deadline and points out that Cup Day is a public holiday in Melbourne (news.com.au).
Why it matters in Victoria
- The deadline is a week earlier than many people expect. The VEC says changes to the Electoral Act 2002 moved the roll close to the day the writs are issued. Some older summaries online still give the previous, later timeline. The VEC's date is the one that counts.
- It falls on a public holiday. Many Melburnians will be at the races or away on the long weekend, so leaving it until Tuesday evening is risky.
- Enrolment is compulsory. According to the VEC, you must enrol if you are an Australian citizen aged 18 or over who has lived in Victoria for more than a month. If you're 17, you can enrol now and you'll be added to the roll automatically when you turn 18 (VEC).
- Recently moved? The VEC says you need to have lived at your new address for 30 days before updating your enrolment.
